Okay, so I got back from seeing this a little while ago, and here's my instant review. It's brilliant. Some people may disagree, but I can't imagine better actors for the characters, better effects, funnier dialogue (thanks, Douglas), and (i'm not just saying this because, well, i love it) but the opening credits song is about the funniest thing I've heard in ages and I already think it deserves an Oscar nod for best song from a motion picture. The damn song had my friends and I laughing so hard we cried...and Earth hadn't even been destroyed yet! I even love the design for Marvin, the manic-depressive robot. And Alan Rickman is a great voice for him. Damn, that's a funny movie! I knew I'd like it (the 70s version was crap) but I didn't realize that it would take me an hour after the movie ended to stop laughing. So very good.

Good stuff. I want to go and see it. I don't know the story at all, but I heard it was quite a bit different from the book. So is the film all 5 books rolled into one, or just the first? If the first, is there going to be sequels?

It's just the first. As it turns out my best friend (who hasn't read it either) loved it so much that we are going again tonight. Don't think there will be sequels. Actually, I think it is very much along the lines of the book, but the book is only just more than 100 pages, so to make it a film, they had to develop some storylines of more minor characters in the book.

Saw it the second time - still damn funny. This time I tried to laugh less and listen more. It worked to an extent. The dolphin song during the opening credits is just so funny. Here's a line:
"We thought you were really sweet, especially your tiny tots and your pregnant women. So long, so long and thanks for all the fish." That's quality songwriting.

I was torn between it and Amytyville Horror and we chose AH. It wasn't very scary really, partially because we sat by teenies who giggled during all the tense moments.
Maybe should have gone to see Hitchhiker's instead with those reviews. Is it a movie for sci-fi addicts, or do you think anyone would enjoy it?

If you enjoy laughing, you will enjoy it. There are some deviations from the book, but Douglas Adams wrote like 85% of the screenplay prior to his death, so the changes were his idea. That's why they work.
