I've been looking at Yorkshire words and phrases and i can't believe that they can all be Yorkshire. Some of them like "You can tell a Yorkshire man, but you can't tell him much" obviously are but...well i don't know maybe just because i'm from Yorkshire they are the norm for me but i can't believe that people wouldn't know what we're on about. Words that mean hit = "bray" or "belt" these must be used all over surely?

So i shall put some words and phrases up and you can tell me if these are just local dialect or not and identify the meaning of them all or what they are.

1. where there's muck there's brass
2. Put wood in't oyl
3. Popped 'is cloggs
4. Tek a good likeness
5. Sup up
6. Kaylied
7. 'appen (not the literal dictionary definition)
8. Gip
9. Flummox
10. Faffin'
11. Beck
12. Throng
13. Wang
14. Pikelet
15. Laik
16. When its brown its done, when its black its buggered

Yup that will do for now. Also, if you have any local dialect you would like to share - please do, it will be interesting to hear! :)

I say and do all the wrong things. I act like a complete simpleton and basically fuck it all up!!! He's gorgeous, funny as hell and he noticed me and trust me thats something in itself. Oh and he smells divine :D lol. Seriously he drives me crazy!! But everytime i see him i just end up making a prat out of myself - im acting like a stupid teenager! :new_cussing: Im one of those people that uses my mouth before ive checked in with my brain so that really doesn't help either. Also i keep things to myself generally - not even that because even i dont know what im thinking or feeling half the time. so the whole getting to know you thing doesn't work all that well! I wish i was more confident in myself and had higher self-esteem - i then might be able to get somewhere in life!!

dont worry you dont have to reply - i just wanted to vent my anger at myself lol. im a complete...erm..as we yorkshire folk say..barmpot lol

You’ve travelled for adventure, romance and culture, so why not to make some friends? Taken from Lonely Planet’s 1000 Ultimate Experiences, here’s a list of places where the welcome is always warm.

Ireland
Centuries of turmoil have certainly taken their toll on the Irish: they’ve been left with a deliciously dark sense of humour and a welcoming attitude towards strangers. That famous ability of the Irish – to find craic (fun times with convivial company) in boom or bust times – means you’re always in for a treat. These days, after the end of the ‘Troubles’, a cautious optimism reigns supreme, infecting the land once again with the sense that anything’s possible.

USA
Blamed though they are for the coming of WWIII, the Anti-Christ, Miley Cyrus, Bruce Willis, monster trucks, rampant street crime, and noise pollution through overloud talking, Americans just take it all in their stride. They know there’s no such thing as a ‘typical Yank’, so you can just stuff your stereotypes in a sack, mister! The USA’s citizens will invariably welcome you and help you get the best out of their country – all they ask in return is for you to leave your preconceptions at home.

Malawi
Malawians describe themselves as ‘the friendliest people in Africa’, living in the ‘warm heart of the continent’. Anyone who’s visited will know that the rare (for Africa) cohesion of the country’s ethnic groups is solid evidence for this, as is the people’s propensity to welcome you into their homes as well as their nation. Malawi is small, poor and without a lot of facilities, but with a greeting like that who needs Western-style comfort?

Fiji
Fijians are generally considered to be the ‘friendliest people on the planet’. And why not? They’ve got plenty to smile about – lush islands, kaleidoscopic reefs, cobalt sea, a wealth of marine life, world-class diving, romantic coastlines, awesome cuisine – and they love to spread the love around. Fijians have a rep for helping travellers feel welcome, thereby allowing you to uncover the best from this sprawling group of islands. Just don’t mention the coup.

Thailand
Southeast Asia’s most-visited country is bound to offer a welter of stereotypes and clichés. Here are some: dazzling islands and beaches; lush and balmy weather; great shopping and great food; the ‘France of Asia’. Here’s another one: ‘world’s friendliest people’. Gawd, not another contender (see Fiji and Samoa). Why bother trying to analyse why the Thais are so easygoing and quick to smile? They just are, and that’s all there is to it.

Samoa
What’s this? Samoa reckons it has ‘the world’s friendliest people’? Hmmm, trouble is there’s no ratifying body for such a claim, meaning the Samoans are up against the Fijians, who also claim to hold the title. OK, enough: let’s settle this with a Googlefight. A search for the phrase ‘Fiji world’s friendliest people’ garners 16,600 hits; the phrase ‘Samoa world’s friendliest people’ reaps 13,800. Sorry, Samoa, the interweb has spoken, although travellers can rest assured that your beautiful country harbours lovely and warm people who will leave a deep and lasting impression.

Vietnam
Vietnam is another country inextricably caught up in Western images and stereotypes: napalm, tormented soldiers, Oliver Stone films… But Vietnam put all that behind it a long time ago and is now on a huge drive to become the new ‘Asian tiger’ economy. Economy and history regardless, travellers are bound to get a friendly welcome and plenty of smiles in Vietnam.

Indonesia
It’s hard to make generalisations about a country that contains so many different cultures. Still, from laid-back Lombok to the rice fields of Java and the highlands of West Papua, the one thing travellers can safely expect is a wide smile from the locals. Indonesians of all stripes share an innate hospitality and a fascination with visitors, and they always find time to stop, meet and greet. Whether it be spontaneous English lessons with bike-riding schoolchildren, casual banter at streetside food stalls or haggling for batiks, interaction with the locals is a highlight of travels in the archipelago.

Scotland
The Scots have survived English invasion, brutal weather and the pain of having the world’s worst goalkeepers. This fighting spirit against insurmountable odds has left them with an extroverted, buoyant demeanour and a blackly humorous nationalism (you’d want to see the funny side after witnessing some of those goalies). Naturally, this attitude rubs off on travellers – Scots are so loyal they want you to share in the good stuff, too.

Turkey
The Turkish people have an unsurpassed reputation for hospitality. With their heavenly cuisine, dreamy coastline and spectacular historical sites, the Turks know there’s no reason to be secretive. Expect warm greetings, countless cups of tea and plenty of time to sit and chat in this charming country.

On 24th August 2009, the Vietnam Immigration Office had passed the law to removed the visa 6 months (single/multiple) for tourist or business entry. This is the second reduction of visa type after the removal of Vietnam 1 year visa.
At present, Vietnam Immigration (A18) strongly advised tourists to register for 1 month or 3 months (single/multiple entry). The process as well as the related submitted documents for getting the visa approved are not significantly changed.
Note:
- Tourists can stay over 1 day in Vietnam from expired date cited on their approval letter. If tourists want to stay over longer, they should renew or extend their visa.
- If the tourists stay over 2 days or more in Vietnam (from expired date cited on their approval letter), surely they will be punish by Vietnam immigration (from $30US/1 day stay over).

The visa validity will be commenced from the date you provide in advance, not from the date you will enter the country. So, just make sure that you make a clear plan of when to enter before ordering a Visa to Vietnam.

Vietnam has never had more foreign tourists running about than now, and the tourism department expects more than two million to come this year - a sizeable increase from last year's already high numbers.

Arrived in Sai Gon on a cheap flight from Hanoi with a rush visa booked through Vietnam Visa online, I am also at the end of my trip and rewarding myself for good budgeting over the whole of my trip. Want to get home and make sure i also feel like i have had a holiday as travelling is VERY hard!!!

Saigon is fassssst! Motorcycle everywhere, same busy horns on vehciles and same crazy road rules apply where you have to cover everyone elses risks and they cover yours. It does seem to work though. I have acustomed myself to the local traffic and now find myslef very confident at crossign roads whislt surrounded by cars, bike and cyclos (rickshaws).

I see lots - looking out tour bus windows, browsing at lacquerware shops on Dong Khoi Street, hanging out open-front travelers cafes in the backpacker area, waving off requests from Honda taxi offers. Some foreigners are here on business too.

In the afternoon I went to the War Museum... all I can say is WHOOOOOOAAAHHH!!! Man that place freaks you out, so graphic about the 'war crimes' from the USA. I walked out feeling really flat after going through and reading most of the material in the museum. So anti USA, i would love to hear the US version though before making anh judgement, but serioulsy looks like Vietnam was a practice ground for new weapons and gases experimentation. Some of the picture of the way the GI's treated people was atrocious. Children, babies and preganant women being killed at point blank range..... not a happy place...

Got out of that sad place, I took a cyclo ride to Reunification Palace which was originally a French palace built in the late 1800s, and refashioned as 'Independence Palace' for the South Vietnamese government. It was here that VC tanks knocked down the gates and flew the North Vietnamese flag in 1975. Surprisingly, the government has never changed the very-1960s interiors. Guides in traditional dress lead you through on an hour-long tour past the former South Vietnamese presidents' desk and reception area, as well as military radio equipment from the bomb-shelter basement. You can forgive the tired jokes for all the insight. I liked that the government's palace had no doors - the downstairs is completely open, with only pillars keeping out the lizards. Watch out for the Cyclos they will try to rip you off. My guy agreed to 15,000 as the price and then tried to say he said 50,000 (as it sounds the same when they speak). Needless to say I told him he was crazy, gave him the 15,000 and walked away. Warning! Next morning, got ready for the trip to the CU CHI TUNNELS (30 miles northwest of Saigon, a 100-minute drive) - an interesting, but time-taking foray into the recreated world where northern troops (Viet Minh, and later Viet Cong) lived and hid from the French and US troops in back-to-back 20th-century wars. Trips of Cu Chi's principal site (Ben Dinh tunnel) start with a charmingly ancient film - supposedly 1967, though my guide (a former South Vietnamese soldier!) scoffed at the idea ('it was made after the war... you can see the rich terrain and jungle... in 1967 it would have been bare from all the chemicals and bombs the US used.' Supposedly the terrain was bare until about 1980.) The grainy black-and-white film, nevertheless, is a fascinating glimpse at a time when the government was more pointed in describing its enemy ('the devils') and celebrating VC 'American-killer heroes.' The tour follows a short looping path past many Cu Chi 'tunnel' sites - some are built into the ground, with canvas tops - recreations of weapons, kitchens - to show how life was carried out underground, but without having to crawl underground to see. In one, guides show how smoke was detoured through mini-tunnels to escape far away from the real tunnel in itself. You also see bomb craters - now ponds - and a wrecked US tank you can climb on. In areas, goofy pop music is inexplicably played on hidden speakers. The claim to fame is a claustrophobic crawl through the 'tunnel' itself - a recreated one, built wider so that 'fat Americans' can go through. Once is enough for me. Many visitors like to shoot AK-47s and M-16s at the (loud) shooting range - it's $1.50 per bullet. Entrance to the site is $5 (80,000D). Cheaper group tours don't include this charge. My third day in Sai Gon, I joined a group to Mekong Delta - My Tho and Ben Tre which is 75km southwest of Saigon, on the northern lip of a Mekong splinter river, the Tien Giang - is all anyone reaches. My Tho's river promenade is an appealing place, with crumbling French villas now home to storefronts and blow-up animals and candies for sale on the kept-clean brick river front. It gets flooded with daytrippers from Saigon daily. Taking boat trips to quirky islands and canals across on Ben Tre island to see coconut candy be made and bee farms. These palm-lined, chocolate-colored canals are lined with homes. I had chance to listen to Mekong's traditional music - tai tu music while enjoying seasonal fruits, tasting rice wine with honey. Woww it was incredibile!! Back to Sai Gon after 2 hour driving, I planed to leave Saigon next day for the beaches......

So, there was I on Saturday in a pub, The Liverpool, having a few pints of best watching the t.v with about 6 million footy supporters. Okay well a quite a lot of people. We, England, were playing the USA! I mean, FFS, I'm only half English, and the other half of me loves America? So, what's a girl to do eh?
Four pints of Cider later and there I am cheering on the USA! In a pub in Liverpool UK!!! Ok so perhaps it wasn't quite a good idea to show such support when all these 6 million 'Ingerlund' supporters were a wee bit, just a tad, pissed out their skulls. I was kind of alone, and it is lonely when 6 million people are all glaring at you in that tone of voice! Ohhhhh, the language! The air was blue!

Well, the black eye and the thick lip are healing nicely thanks! Oh and I did manage to remove all traces of a star spangled banner from my rear! :pottytrain2:

Anyway, COME ON INGERLUND! :wav:
