i just saw a post for I, Robot, which i will try reading.
i'm looking for other selections from sci-fi.
i like the genre, but i find a lot of the books to be boring. i'm looking for sci-fi with a point, not just action and aliens.
the only real sci-fi book i can recall reading is stranger in a strange land.
help please!

I, Robot is exactly what your looking for, I guarantee it. If you don't like it I'll eat my website.
The Martian Chronicles and Songs Of Distant Earth are good too.

Arthur C. Clarke!
If you're looking for sci-fi, all his 2001 books are the way to go. He throws humor in, and his technology is believeable- he founded the ideas for a lot of what we've got now in his books.
And if you want something completely out of the ordinary, improbable, and hilarious- go with Douglas Adams' Hitchiker series. WAY TOO FUNNY.

yes...go for the Hitchhiker books!
Along with The Martian Chronicles, I'd suggest bradbury's The Illustrated Man. It is individual short stories woven together in a frame story. So, the story, itself, changes every 15 or so pages. That's really good stuff!

Hm. Now, it's striking me that I haven't done a lot of sci-fi reading.
Maybe because I've been swallowed intothe gAPING MAW that is Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. holy gods. But it's good. read it. If you want fantasy to EAT YOU ALIVE.

Hmm.. I'm not sure if it's sci-fi but this book is pretty damn weird. It's also worth ready very good.
When the Wind Blows by James Patterson
also the followup to that..
The Lake House.
It's about scientifically engineered kids who've been grown by means of invitro and have been injected with bird DNA..It has a plot its not all weirdness, it's a very good book.
