One of those films that I've heard alot about but never seen....so I rectified that by watching it yesterday.

It's meant to be a comedy, infact it was ranked the 3rd best comedy film of all time in some poll....however, it's dated. The only bit I found really funny was the last scene when Dr. Strangelove is proposing that they go underground with 4 women each to repopulate the planet and his arm is behaving independently to his body and he keeps calling the US president 'Mein Fuhrer' (he's an ex-Nazi scientist) - that scene was quality - if the whole film was Dr. Strangelove just acting 'strange' then it would be the best film of all time.

I'm not slamming it, I liked it. It was 'amusing' all the way through but I think it probably hasn't aged as well as other films.....maybe it's harder for comedies than other genres.

Definately recommend watching it. You get 3 Peter Sellers performances, it's a Stanley Kubrick film, there's a guy riding a Nuclear Bomb, it has James Earl Jones' in his first film role, plus it's a classic and a modern icon.

i saw it about 5 years ago and i agree - sometimes funny, but definitely dated.

you know, kubrick is a mixed bag for me. I just didn't like A Clockwork Orange at all, but I loved Full Metal Jacket.

I feel the same way about Tarantino, too. There were some parts of Pulp Fiction that I really liked (for instance, the soundtrack) but I just didn't like the movie. I had thought Reservoir Dogs was good, but I haven't watched it all the way through since the first time I saw it. But then Jackie Brown - man, that movie rocks! My best friend gave me the collector's edition - some great stuff on that. Of course, I can't recommend Kill Bill enough...such a cool movie.

i liked dr strangelove a lot. not so much as comedy but as scary political stuff. a clockwork orange ranks among my all-time FAVorites. in facti would say "best movie ever," strictly because you didn't like it. what didn;t you like about it anyway? one of the cases where i thought the movie was actually way better than book. full metal jacket was great too

The only thing about Kubrick is that sometimes , to me, he just goes off on too much of a weird tangent. Full Metal Jacket kicks my fucking scrotum though. mmmmmm

I thought Dr. Strangelove was in the vein of the pink panther series? I LOVE Pink Panther.

Hey Prof. Puke, the sample at the beginning of Beta Blocker, was that from Dr. Strangelove? You know, "You might be my enemy, but sometimes you're also... my friend." ?

I haven't seen it, but my friend michael heard it and he said he thought it was from that. pray tell....

prof - i don't know exactly what it is about the movie that i don't like. i mean, i don't hate it by any means... and it isn't that i don't get the movie...i think i just don't get why so many people love it enough to call it their favorite movie just to spite me.

then again...

my favorite movie of all time is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and I doubt that too many people under age 60 would agree with me on that one. in fact probably out of what i'd call my top 10 favorite movies of all time...only a few are in color.

i like stanley kubrick films. and tarantino films.
but sometimes i can only like movies on a certain level.
a clockwork orange is such a film. i didn't like it. didn't really like the style etc. but the point of the film make it overwhelmingly worthy of watching.
some movies i find to be nothing special, yet days and days later i'm still contemplating issues that the movie raised.
like eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. the movie was okay ... maybe even good ... but nothing fantastic. but i kept thinking about it for days and days.
i think i rate films (in the long run) by how much it makes me think.
i also like gone in 60 seconds, for some odd reason, but it is worthless in the "makes me think" category.
